Practice Summary

This article, "The Mystery of the Red Bees of Red Hook", by Susan Dominus is1 published by NY Times on November 29, 2010. It says that the bees which raised1 in Red Hook, Brooklyn has2 been showing sign3 of a brilliant red color instead of amber on their honey stomach as well as on their honeycomb. One of the beekeepers send1 a sample of these red substance to test and find1 out that they are1 riddled with Red Dye No. 40.  It says that these bees might be drinking the maraschino cherry juice from the closed by4 factory, Dell’s Maraschino Cherries Company, instead of the natural fruits and vegetables on the farmland. The owner, Arthur Mondella, of the company5 hired Andrew CotE, the leader of the New York City Beekeepers Association, to help to find a solution. Mr. CotE says that the bees are1 as troublesome to the company as the Red Dye No 40 is1 to the beekeepers. According to Mr. CotE, this problem can1 be solved by either putting up screens or having closer sweet nectar. It is part of the New York project to find a solution to this maraschino juice bee problem.
